Asbestos Disposal in Central Coast

Central Coast Council takes asbestos at only two facilities, Buttonderry and Woy Woy, and only from a Central Coast address. Every load must be booked at least 24 hours ahead, and asbestos is not accepted within an hour of closing.

What asbestos disposal in Central Coast actually involves

Book the load with the weighbridge operator before you go. Buttonderry's number is (02) 4350 1320; for Woy Woy, use Council's waste facility page, since its published number is not the same across Council's own pages. Tell the gate operator on arrival that you have asbestos. All asbestos must be double-wrapped in plastic at least 200 microns thick, and loads that do not meet the requirements may be refused. An unwrapped load is charged at the asbestos rate for the whole load.

What it costs at the gate

Council's 2026-27 fee schedule lists asbestos under its special waste line: A$613.30 a tonne including GST (A$557.55 plus A$55.75 GST), with a minimum charge of A$39.98 a load including GST. The same line covers other waste that needs extra handling, not asbestos alone. Large commercial quantities over 10 m³ go to Buttonderry.

Packing it for the trip

Council's own guidelines set out the detail. Friable material is kept damp or sealed with PVA glue, in double 200-micron bags no larger than 1200 mm by 900 mm and no heavier than 25 kg. Non-friable material is watered down and wrapped in two layers of 200-micron plastic, sealed with waterproof tape, in packages no more than 500 mm high. Each load is inspected on arrival. On the road, the load travels in a truck lined with plastic, wet down, sealed and covered.

Never in a bin, never buried

Asbestos must not go in a kerbside bin, or in an uncovered or unapproved skip bin. Council's policy adds: never recycle, reuse or bury it either. Disposing of asbestos on your own land needs a development consent from Council, and any approved on-site disposal is shown on the property's section 10.7 planning certificate.

If you carry more than 100 kg or 10 m² of asbestos waste from your home yourself, you report the load to the EPA on its household asbestos form; if a licensed contractor carries it, the contractor reports it instead. You stay responsible for your asbestos waste being disposed of lawfully even when you pay someone to take it away, so get a copy of the disposal receipt. Report illegally dumped asbestos to Central Coast Council on 02 4306 7900 or the EPA Environment Line on 131 555: Council's policy says the person who dumped it is responsible for the clean-up, and if they cannot be identified, the landowner is.
